During his very first visit to the comic-Con in San Diego, George Lucas talks about his museum project “Lucas Museum of Narrative Art”.

Although he has been shaping the nerd culture with “Star Wars” for almost 50 years: George Lucas (81) visited the comic-Con in San Diego for the first time at the weekend. The trade fair for pop culture, which has been organized in California since 1970, is the greatest of its kind. At its premiere, Lucas, together with his directorial colleague Guillermo del Toro (60) and “Star Wars” equipment, asked himself the questions of moderator Queen Latifah (55).

According to media reports, George Lucas spoke primarily about his museum, which is to be opened in Los Angeles in 2026. The private collection of the “Star Wars” master mastermind is to be exhibited in the “Lucas Museum of Narrative Art”.

“Temple for the art of the people”

The facility is “dedicated to the art of illustrated stories”. In addition to comics and illustrations from films, the exhibited works also include works of art by Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) or Norman Rockwell (1894-1978).

George Lucas claims to collect art for 50 years – and has compiled around 40,000 objects. At some point he asked himself: “What should I do with all of this?” He said at the comic-Con. Selling was out of the question for him. Instead, he decided to found his own museum – a place that he sees as “a kind of temple for the art of the people”.

“The stories that art tells are often the key to understanding a society and its wishes – be it our own or that of another,” Lucas is quoted on the museum’s website. In addition to the namesake, the “Lucas Museum of Narrative Art” also includes his wife Mellody Hobson (56), with whom he launched the project together.
