Clean for 35 years: Elton John celebrates a special anniversary

Elton John (78) looks back on 35 years of sobriety – and celebrates this very personal anniversary in the circle of his family. A loving insight: Flowers, cards and self -painted pictures decorate the day of honor – presumably by husband David Furish (62) and the sons Zachary (13) and Elijah (11). “I am grateful for all the love on my abstinence birthday,” he writes about the contribution.

As Elton John told in an interview with the “Time” magazine last year, he came into contact with cocaine for the first time through his manager and partner John Reid (75). At first the drug helped him to overcome his shyness – but soon she took control of him. “You make terrible decisions on drugs,” said the musician in retrospect.

“I wanted to be loved so desperately that I just took hostages. I saw someone I liked, spent three or four months with him – and in the end they hated me because they had nothing more in their life,” recalls Elton John. In 1990 he decided to finally use drug therapy with addiction therapy. Since then he has been tirelessly committed to others: As the “Time” magazine reported, he supported Robbie Williams (51) decisively in his first withdrawal-and also tried to help George Michael (1963-2016), but without success.

Elton John has been one of the defining icons of the international music scene since the 1970s. He wrote music history with world hits like “Rocket Man”, “Tiny Dancer” and “Candle in the Wind”. Since 1993, the Briton found its luck privately alongside the Canadian film producer David Furnish. In 2005 the couple received a registered partnership, followed in 2014. The two sons together were born with the help of a surrogate mother.
