The Queen has Corona: Stormy times in the Windsor house

One drama after another shakes the British royal family. Now the pandemic is also shaking the brightest figure in the house – Her Majesty himself.

Prince Andrew experiences his “final humiliation”, in Prince Charles’ foundation the police are investigating the cause “According to Cash?”, “Prince Harry is fighting for police protection” and then the corona virus also shakes the royal family.

The British tabloid could have filled its pages for months with the stuff of royal headlines from the past few days. In fact, these royal dramas unfolded in a single week.

Probably the biggest shock finally came on Sunday afternoon: Queen Elizabeth II is infected – so far only with mild symptoms and still dutifully able to work, but the country is still holding its breath. The triple vaccination against the corona virus fuels the hope that the monarch – the rock in the royal surf – will soon be strong again. Because 2022 should actually be the year in which the Windsors wanted to celebrate extensively after difficult times.

The dramatic cascade began on Tuesday when a court in New York issued a statement that had it all: “Virginia Giuffre and Prince Andrew have reached an out-of-court settlement,” it said. The settlement, which is reported to cost the 62-year-old up to £12million, is the preliminary endpoint in Andrew’s abuse scandal. A defamatory public trial against Giuffre, who accused him of multiple sexual abuse, has thus been averted. But Andrew’s image and his chances of a return to public life as a royal are still gone.

As soon as the ink of the damning headlines had dried, the London police announced less than 24 hours later that they would investigate the royals. It is about reports that a man from Saudi Arabia was offered awards and British citizenship in return for donations. At the center of the affair is a former close associate of the heir to the throne Prince Charles (73), who, as managing director of his charitable foundation The Prince’s Foundation, is said to have promised a Saudi businessman an accolade and a British passport in return for donations. The palace hastened to deny Charles any knowledge of the alleged incident. There were no unpleasant reporter questions for the heir to the throne for the time being, because storm “Eunice” forced Charles to cancel a planned trip to Wales.

Instead, Prince Harry also made headlines from afar on Friday. Because he fears for his family’s safety when visiting the UK, the 37-year-old, who now lives in California, wants to pay for British police protection. However, Harry was rebuffed, which is why he is now taking on the British government in court. In a written statement, a lawyer for the Interior Ministry accused the royal of a lack of respect and described his offer of payment as “irrelevant”. It is questionable whether the procedure will make it easier for Harry and his wife Meghan to get closer to the royal family.

So that leaves the Queen. Not only is she still by far the most popular member of the royal family in polls, 2022 should also be her year of honor: the 95-year-old has been on the throne for 70 years, and her kingdom has had a bitter party after Brexit, long lockdowns and a government crisis necessary. Parades, a concert with big stars in front of the palace, a later curfew in the pubs and an extra holiday are intended to unite the British and honor the Queen’s unique reign. The spectacle is planned for the beginning of June – so long enough to get well.
