“Yesterday part of my heart went” – with these shattering words, Paulina Weigelt begins her farewell post for her late cousin Laura Dahlmeier (1993-2025). The former world-class biathlete died on Monday with a tragic recovery happiness in Pakistan, as her management confirmed on Wednesday.
In an emotional Instagram contribution, the young athlete opens her heart and gives a deep insight into her grief. “My cousin, my sporting and human model,” she writes about the 31-year-old, who had a fatal crashed in a rockfall.
“The mountains were their home”
Weigelt draws the image of a woman who found her true home in nature. “The mountains were at home. She loved being outside – in nature, with friends, or just with herself,” recalls the grieving cousin of the deceased. Dahlmeier’s dream was to climb every summit, to accept every challenge. And that is exactly what she did: “With a strength, a laugh and a joie de vivre that was contagious.”
The young ski and mountain bike driver describes her cousin as someone who has never given up: “Who made rooms brighter with his laughter. The other motivated to believe in himself – in sports, in life. I can’t believe that you are no longer there.” But at the same time she finds comforting words: “But I know you will be with me forever – in every step I take, in every decision, in everyone I wear for you.” Dahlmeier loved her last summit: “And I know you are where you always felt freely.”
Currently not possible to rescue the body
Laura Dahlmeier crashed on Monday at 5,700 meters in the Pakistani Karakorum Mountains when she was hit by a rockfall. The recovery of your body is not yet possible due to the extreme conditions. The native of Garmisch-Partenkirchner stated in writing that in such a case nobody should risk his life to recover her.
