James Cameron declared in a new interview that he is “ready to direct” the films Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. The third “Avatar” movie, officially entitled Avatar: fire and ashit opens in cinemas at the end of this year.
Cameron initially expressed doubts about his future as director of “Avatar”, declaring Empire in 2022 that directing the franchise is “overwhelming” and that I could want to “give up the post” to another director from Avatar 4. But that is no longer the intention of the Oscar winner.
“There is no reason not to do it”Cameron said before his 71. Birthday on August about directing more sequelae of “Avatar” to Empire magazine in a new interview. “I am healthy, I am ready to start. I do not rule it out. That is, I have to do it with energy, to be able to handle the volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. Do you understand? Maybe I cannot do it … but if I can, I will.”
Cameron said that he already has a history of delegating his management projects to other filmmakers, especially highlighting the delivery of ALITA: Combat Angel to Robert Rodríguez. Cameron was still very involved in the production of the film, but was not physically in command.
“He respected what I had written. We worked in close collaboration,” Cameron said about Rodríguez.
But Cameron’s plan for now is to direct “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5”, even with other projects outside “Avatar” in development. The filmmaker is working on Adaptations of the books “The Ghost of Hiroshima” and “Los Devils”which could also affect its ability to direct more “avatar” sequelae.
James Cameron’s plans beyond Avatar 5
Two films that Cameron definitely does not plan to direct are Avatar 6 and Avatar 7, although he declared to People magazine that he has ideas for both.
“We already have everything written until the fifth movie, and I have ideas for the sixth and seventh, although it probably gives the post by then”Cameron said. “Mortality reaches us. But hey, we are enjoying what we do. We love it. We have the opportunity to work with great people.”
For the unhappy fans with which Cameron’s career is fully dominated by the “Avatar” franchise, the director replied at that time: “People always ask us: ‘Why did you continue working on the same …?’ Why why [George] Lucas continued working on the same? Because [Gene] Roddenberry continued working on the same? Because when you connect with people, why waste it? Why start from scratch with something that might not connect? “
Avatar: Fire and Ash was originally going to arrive in 2024, but Disney delayed it until December 19, 2025. Avatar 4 is scheduled for December 21, 2029, followed by “Avatar 5” on December 19, 2031. According to this chronology, The supposed last “Avatar” film will premiere 22 years after the original 2009 box office success.
