Mayor wants to have Park named in Dahlmeier

After the fatal rescue accident of the ex-biathlete, her home community initially held back with public commemoration. Now there are new plans – and another place for grief.

After Laura Dahlmeier’s death, the mayor of her home community wants to have a park named after the ex-biathlete. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen municipality of the German Press Agency.

“In the September council, I will submit an application that we name the Kurpark in Laura-Dahlmeier-Park,” said the Mayor of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Elisabeth Koch, the “Munich Merkur” beforehand. That is “so coordinated with the family”.

A first memorial is already in the park

People can mourn at a temporary memorial in the Kurpark in Partenkirchen. According to “Münchner Merkur”, the memorial was spontaneously built with a picture on a wooden stele, lantern and a stone from the home mountains, including a badge at the weekend – “in close coordination with the family”, as Koch told the “Merkur”.

Upon request, the Garmischer Rathaus had initially said that planning was so far reserved with plans for a memory of Dahlmeier – and would be “only contributed to the family at the request of the family”. There was also a place in a Catholic church to commemorate the ex-biathlete. Garmisch-Partenkirchen had already appointed honorary citizen in 2018.

Rathaus collects contributions for condolence book

In the meantime, people can also express their sympathy in a condolence book. The sudden death of Dahlmeier, a “highly valued and lovable personality”, “touched many people in the heart – far beyond the borders of our place”, the community said on its website.

“Feel free to write us your thoughts and memories,” says the call. “All incoming condolence messages are collected by the employees of the town hall and summarized in a condolence book that is handed over to the family.”
