Donald Trump praises Sydney Sweeneey’s controversial jeans advertising after he learned that she was registered as a republican.
After Donald Trump (79) found out that Sydney Sweeney (27) is registered as a Republican, he was enthusiastic about her controversial American-Eagle advertising. The President praised the campaign, which is heavily criticized because of her words with “jeans” and “genes”.
“She is a registered republican? Oh, now I love her advertising!”, Trump said on Sunday, while he was in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Air Force One. , the 27-year-old “Euphoria” actress has been registered as a Republican in Florida since June 2024, but never publicly supported Trump.
The president continued: “Is that correct, is Sydney Sweeney …? You would be surprised at how many people are Republicans. This is something I didn’t know. But I’m glad that you told me that. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered republican, I think her advertising is fantastic!”
Controversy about pun with genes
The American-Eagle campaign “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” previously triggered violent reactions online. Critics accuse the advertising of promoting the word game between “jeans” (pants) and “genes” (genes) eugenic ideals. In the commercial, the blue -eyed, blonde actress explains: “Genes are passed on by parents to the descendants and often determine properties such as hair color, personality and even eye color.” Then she adds: “My jeans are blue.”
Some social media users even compared the advertising with “Nazi propaganda” and accused American Eagle of glorifying Sweeneey’s origin.
The company clearly rejected the criticism and insisted that the campaign had only turned around the jeans: “Your jeans. Your history” ,. “We will continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans confidently, in their own way. Great jeans look good at everyone.”
Trump’s communication director Steven Cheung (43) described the negative response to advertising as “prime example of Cancel Culture that was out of control”. “This twisted, idiotic and dense liberal thinking is a big reason why the Americans chose 2024 in 2024,” he added. “You are fed up with this bullshit.” Vice President JD Vance (41) also mocked the critics and said in a podcast: “My political advice to the Democrats is to say to everyone who finds Sydney Sweeney attractive that he is a Nazi. That seems to be her actual strategy.”
Fox News plunges on the discussion
Even Stephen Colbert (61), who often speaks against Trump and the White House, called the criticism of Sweeney and American Eagle an “overreaction”. Fox News is currently slaughtering them with relish: According to a study by the liberal media observation group Media Matters for America, the transmitter devoted the controversy over 85 minutes in at least 20 segments,
So far, Sweeney has not publicly commented on the controversy. The actress is currently shooting the third season of the HBO series “Euphoria” and was recently seen at the premiere of her new indie film “Americana”.
