“The theater is a precious gem that we have to take care of and not abandon. It gives us independence, name and personality,” says Germán Tripelwho stars the musical “Gutenberg! The musical” next to Santiago Otero Ramoswith the accompaniment of Hernán Matorra to the piano, these last two duo of the excellent “Murder for two.”
Written by Scott Brown and Anthony King, It opens on August 12 in the Pablo Picasso room of the Paseo la Plaza at 20.30. This absurd comedy focuses on the history of two “serious” theater authors and theater composers, which are a bit clueless, who are looking for investors who finance a musical about the life of Johannes Gutenberg (The creator of the printing press), after a (very little) intense search for information on Google.
The musical premiered in the off-broadway and went to Broadway in 2023. We talked with Tripel and Otero Ramos.
Journalist: What is the most attractive of this musical?
Germán Tripel: It is an antimusical, a joke, an irreverence towards the institution of the musical. They are two characters that seek that people and producers buy their work but make no sense, it is a beautiful and fun criticism.
Santiago Otero Ramos: We have fun doing it, it is absurd, and it ends up seeing how unnecessary it is to finally do this musical. We interpret many characters.
Q.: There is theater inside the theater, with authors looking for something to release and a somewhat crazy creation process, what can you tell?
GT: It is a work that has nothing strange in the middle, does not have a spoiler, these two antiheroes are thrown into the pool, are compensated in this madness that is to write a musical and act all the characters, sing all the songs and expose mistakes that are usually made when making a musical.
SOR: For an actor, working in works that have to do with theater within the theater generates an elaboration of more layers of meaning and a larger laboratory. Virtue has to do with occurrences in decisions of why they choose to tell how they tell it. The clichés appear for which they believe the musicals work. They deal with a lot of characters.
Q.: Why do you want to talk about the story of Gutenberg and what can we tell the story of the creator of the printing press? How was your contribution to the history of art and communication?
GT: It is not serious, they are two characters as if they were the 3 chiflados, they grab a name because they occur to them to write about the first book and from there they refer to the printing press and then to their inventor Gutenberg. They go there but mix many things, do not download information or data, it is a crazy comedy talking about someone who Google they.
SOR: The joke is like the musical and the decisions they make, the condiments, the look of these two that suddenly, after seeing some plays were made fans and began to write to produce this work for Corrientes Street.
Q.: How much is the Hernán Matorra seal?
GT: He is a great musical director who has a lot of patience, is very quiet for direction and guides us naturally. We weren’t with the band yet but it will have the touch of musicality that Hernán always imposes.
SOR: With Hernán we did many projects, we respect each other but there are some surprises with him and his seal is very marked.
Q.: What can you say about theater and culture today?
GT: Many times culture is relegated with the excuse that it is the silver of others, of the State, but a country without culture is not a country, it is simply a territory where people have no seal. Luckily we have a very large country, 350 works were released in theater, they opened new spaces, others closed clear, but art opens the way who is. The good thing about art is that it is apolitical, beyond that it is always revolutionary. It is important to respect it, accompany it and continue promoting so that tomorrow they speak of Argentina not only for football but in the artistic.
SOR: We crossed a very important crisis as a country, the theater was always a balm, refuge and resistance. People turn to the theater, luckily and seek something that allows them to deal with hate and forms that are reproduced today. Theater is a way of exposing that, there is something of that irreverence of the work that we are living.
