As a Duke of Cornwall, Prince William has a special reason to be happy: A football club from the county celebrates the historical climb.

Prince William (43) not only inherited the title Prince of Wales from his father, but also that of the Duke of Cornwall. And as such, the British heir to the throne has something to celebrate: For the first time in history, a football club made it from the county to the National League, England’s fifth division.

Prince William congratulates the club from Cornwall

Prince William, self -confessed fan of Aston Villa and President of the English Football Association, did not miss the opportunity to congratulate the Truro City club personally. In a letter to team captain Connor Riley-Lowe, he praised the club’s performance through his private secretary: “The Duke knows that they have only recently returned after a few years and, like everyone in Cornwall, will keep their fingers crossed.”

Truro City, also known as “The Tinners”, was founded in 1889 and is the most traditional football club of the southwesternest county of England. Cornwall is geographically remote and hardly represented in English professional football – the region is more known for rugby and cricket. Truro City played in the lower amateur and half profile for many years, sometimes even outside of Cornwall, since the old stadium “Treyew Road” was demolished in 2019. It was not until 2023 that the club returned with the new home “Langarth Stadium”. In April, the Tinners sensationally secured the climb.

“Prince William has his warmest congratulations on the promotion to the National League – the first professional team from Cornwall at all,” the letter says. The start of the season is imminent: On Saturday it goes away to Wealdstone, a week later the first home game against York City follows. In Cornwall you fever – and the royal patron are right.
