Daniel Küblböck died about seven years ago. A new documentary gives insights into the life of the former DSDS star. It is also about traumatic experiences with TV shows.
It is January 2004, Australia. Millions of spectators watch an 18-year-old Daniel Küblböck lies in a glass coffin. Then tens of thousands of cockroaches pour over his body. He screams. Winds. Pure panic. Scenes that burn up with the spectators, but especially with himself.
The ex-DSDS star came out 21 years ago in the first season of “I’m a star-get me out of here!” to. What started in the jungle as two weeks was a kind of trauma for him. “The jungle was really bad. I experienced some bad things. I still have dreams of it today,” he says later.
A year earlier, Küblböck had taken third place at “Deutschland sucht den Superstar”. He was shrill, unconventional and was considered a favorite of the public. Then came the offer for a new format. “You also have to say that a lot was withheld from us in the first season. Yes, I thought I was sitting in the jungle for two weeks and just having a little fun, I didn’t really find a bad idea now,” you hear him say in the ARD documentary.
Daniel Küblböck has already collapsed in front of running cameras
What he had no idea: He would be a record holder for most jungle tests in the first season. After three nominations in a row, he broke out in tears in front of the camera. “I really had the impression that I couldn’t please the viewers. They want to finish me, I thought, and was about to get out voluntarily.” Not wrongly. So Küblböck had already been seen in DSDS in front of the cameras when his girlfriend Gracia left.
But it was not just the exams that brought him to his limits. Life in the camp also murmered the singer: “RTL always put us against each other for the show – that’s why we hated and loved at the same time!” He said. Nevertheless, Küblböck saw himself as someone who does not give up: “I think many have now noticed that I am a fighter and that I don’t let myself be put down in delicate situations.”
After the jungle, he remained a welcome guest on TV shows, tried artistically, looking for new ways. Between 2003 and 2018 he went through several phases of his personal development. Shortly before his disappearance, he introduced himself to the public as Lana Kaiser. September 2018 then the drama. On the Aidaluna, somewhere in the North Atlantic in front of Newfoundland, surveillance cameras, such as a person, presumably Küblböck, are showing determined in a determined manner over the railing and jumps into the sea. The search was unsuccessful. In 2021 he was officially declared dead.
Well, for his 40th birthday, the ARD documentary “The Küblböck-Story-Your Lana Kaiser”-looks back with recordings that show how much the first jungle stay consumed on it. And with the voice of a young man who already suspected that some experiences have a lifetime.
