It sounds like a story from Hollywood: Donald Trump calls Emma Thompson and asks for a date. The US President chose an unfavorable time for this.
Donald Trump (79) calls Emma Thompson (66) and invites her to the dinner – of all things that will become final on the day when her divorce becomes final. The British actress has now revealed this piquant anecdote at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland.
Thompson just turned “Primary Colors” in 1998 and was sitting in her trailer when the phone rang. “It was Donald Trump,” says the 66-year-old. “He said, ‘Hello, here is Donald Trump.’ I thought that was a joke and asked: ‘How can I help you?’ Maybe he needed a directional description. “
“A nice divorced, it was what he was looking for”
But today’s US President was serious. “Then he said: ‘I would like to invite you to spend the night in one of my beautiful houses. Maybe we could eat together,” reports Thompson. Your polite answer: “This is very nice. Thank you very much. I’ll get in touch with you.”
As it turned out, Trump’s timing was no coincidence. The politician had just separated from his second wife Marla Maples (61) – and his adored person was apparently free again. “It became clear to me that my divorce judgment had become final that day,” said the “Harry Potter” star. “And I bet he has people looking for suitable people he could do. You know a nice divorced, that was what he was looking for.” She refers to the fact that Trump had found out her trailer’s number as “stalking”.
Thompson would have rejected Trump’s advances either
At that time, Emma Thompson, who had already announced her separation from husband Kenneth Branagh (64) in 1995, was already in a relationship with her co-star Greg Wise (69). The couple later married. However, she would have rejected the offer either way – even if she jokes about the possible consequences of another decision: “I could have gone out with Donald Trump and then I would have had a story. I could have changed the course of American history.”
At the festival in Locarno, the Oscar winner received the Leopard Club Award for her extraordinary career.
