For his life’s work and for his new film: Colin Farrell receives the Golden Icon Award at the Zurich Film Festival.

A year before his 50th birthday: Colin Farrell (49) receives a prize for his life’s work. The Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) award the Hollywood star in September 2025 with the Golden Icon Award. Since its foundation in 2005, the festival has recognized actors who shaped the cinema and inspired the cinema. The previous winners include Arnold Schwarzenegger (78), Hugh Grant (64) and finally Kate Winslet (49).



“Colin Farrell is one of the most spirited and charismatic character actors in the author’s cinema,” praises festival boss Christian Junge in a statement. The actor convinces as “villain as well as as a romantic hero and also in complex roles in between”.

Colin Farrell: To a guest with a new film “Ballad of a Small Player”

Colin Farrell not only gets the Golden Icon Award for his life’s work, but also for his new film “Ballad of a Small Player”, which he will introduce in Zurich. In it, the Iris embodies a British gambling player who is hiding from debtors in the Asian player Mecca Meca.


The “Ballad of a Small Player” is directed by the Austrian-Swiss director Edward Berger (55), born in Germany. Berger has made a name for himself internationally with “nothing new in the West” and “Conclave”.

The trip to ZFF becomes Colin Farrell’s first visit to Zurich. “I am really looking forward to strolling through the streets, drinking good coffee and getting to know Zurich’s life,” explains the star in a statement. “It is both generous and moving that my years of work in the field of film is recognized by such a renowned festival that celebrates the cinema from all over the world.”


Colin Farrell will walk over the green carpet of the Zurich Film Festival on September 27, 2025. The next day he is said to keep a master class in the largest city in Switzerland in which he gives insights into his work.

Colin Farrell became a star around the turn of the millennium and played in blockbusters like “Minority Report”. Later he increasingly turned to idiosyncratic indie productions, from “see Bruges … and die?” to “The Banshees of Inisherin”.
