A good 25 years ago, the four friends from “Sex and the City” conquered the world. Six seasons, two films and three seasons of the successor series “And Just Like That” later should be over.
Four women in New York – between friendship, work, love and sex, between chic outfits, high heels and cosmopolitan cocktails. That was the recipe for success with which the “Sex and the City” series became a sensation worldwide around the turn of the millennium.
Two movies followed on six seasons and in 2021 with “and just like that …” even another successor series – but after three seasons of this sequel, it should now be finally over.
The last episode of the HBO series will be released in the USA on Thursday (August 14) and on Friday (August 15th) in Germany on Sky and WoW. “It is really the end of a television era,” commented the magazine “Cosmopolitan”.
Fans worldwide grew up with the four friends
So open, relaxed and funny, independent and self-determined like Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), four women have never had a good chat about their lives and their sex life in particular.
The first episode of “Sex and the City” in 1998 ran in the USA, from there it was about the world. In 2001 was the start in Germany. The series based on the books of the sex columnist Candace Bushnell was awarded a prize and a cult.
Millions of fans followed the ups and downs in the lives of the four friends, identified with them, or often with one of them very special, and have practically grew up with them.
Successor series with “even more complicated reality” from 50
Already after the end of the six seasons “Sex and the City” in 2004 the mourning was great. Two movies in 2008 and 2010 comforted fans, even if the reviews were sometimes devastating for the second film.
The surprising announcement of a successor series 2021 caused enthusiasm. In “And Just Like That …” the friends are no longer in the “complicated reality of life and friendships in their thirties”, but in the “even more complicated reality” from 50.
And there were only three. Cattrall had got out. Rumors about disputes behind the scenes, especially with Parker, persistent.
“I’m not ready to say goodbye”
Now the new farewell. “I am not yet ready to say goodbye to Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte,” complained a columnist of the magazine “Harper’s Bazaar” – and should speak from the heart of many fans.
Producer Michael Patrick King saw it differently. While he wrote the last episode of the third season, he realized that this was a good time for an end, King surprisingly said in early August.
“Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat in the past 27 years. I think I loved her most,” commented main actress Sarah Jessica Parker and colleague Davis wrote that she was “deeply sad”.
Series only as a “hate watch”?
It remained open whether the farewell was really voluntary. The reviews for the third season were very mixed, the number of spectators decreased. Many fans commented on social networks that they actually only considered the series as a “hate watch” – so to make fun of it.
“It is time for a relieved sigh,” commented the “Guardian”. You just have to admit that “and just like that …” was never as good as “Sex and the City” – and that deeply disappointed real fans of the four friends.
Is there still hope for the “Generation Sex and the City”?
“We just keep going,” said leading actress Parker as the recipe for success for “and just like that …”. But maybe the world has changed too much in the past around 30 years.
In such a way that the original fans were no longer really reached and that no new ones could be gained from a completely different generation.
The still faithful fans of the “Generation Sex and the City” remains the hope that it could go on again at some point – after all, this hope has now been fulfilled twice.
And fans will continue to flock to the original films of the series in New York. So many of them in recent years that the owner of the series house of leading actress Parker in West Village has now even applied for a goal for their staircase from the monument protection authority.
