Monica Seles is suffering from Myasthenia Gravis. Steffi Graf’s once great rival does not want to give up.
The former tennis player Monica Seles (51) suffers from the neuromuscular autoimmune disease Myasthenia Gravis, as she made public. In the case of the disease, there is a disturbance of the transmission of signals between nerves and muscles. Seles, who said goodbye as a tennis professional in 2008 and was the greatest rival of Steffi Graf (56) for a long time, is combative.
“As with all my fights on the tennis court”
“I have experienced some hard competitions over the years and now I face a new opponent: Myasthenia Gravis. And as with all my fights on the tennis court, I don’t give up,” reports the now as part of an advertising partnership.
As a professional athlete, she knew her body well, she explains on US television. Suddenly Seles had perceived “like extreme weakness in the legs and arms” and saw twice. “This is very unusual,” her body told her. The later diagnosis was “a relief, but also a challenge”.
She had to learn to live with the disease
Learning to be able to deal with the disease and live was a “very difficult time” for her. “Even coming here today … In the past, traveling would have been a child’s play. Now I had to get tips for packing. I had to learn to live with MG in a new way.”
Seles explains that they want to use their awareness in a positive way to stimulate discussions about the disease and their symptoms. In the past, she did not know what Myasthenia Gravis was, she even had difficulty pronouncing the name of the disease.
