The director Wim Wenders has become one of the largest German names in the international film world in the past decades with films such as “Paris, Texas”, “The Heaven over Berlin” or “Buena Vista Social Club”. On August 14th, the filmmaker celebrates his 80th birthday. Shortly before, Frank-Walter Steinmeier (69) has already spoken out. The Federal President not only congratulates the director, but also thanks him.



“Openness, empathy, affection, attitude”

“My congratulations apply to one of the most internationally most important filmmakers of our time,” writes Steinmeier in a message. He congratulates “a master of seeing and great European storytellers”. Wenders helped the German author cinema to recognize international recognition.

According to Steinmeier, the work of the filmmaker is characterized by “open -mindedness, empathy, affection, attitude”. One could look at “a rich, extremely diverse work” that Wenders had created. “They have given us pictures and wise life to master, gave us life that have become deep into our memory. And they gave us with insights what it means to be a person. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

The city of Düsseldorf, in which Wenders was born in 1945, is already congratulating. “As one of the best known Düsseldorfers, Wim Wenders has shaped German film culture for decades,” says Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller cited in a message. Wenders is “a great ambassador from Düsseldorf, whose art radiates far beyond our city limits. With his willingness to experiment and innovation, he inspired generations of directors.”
