A new film anniversary and the start of the career of Sinéad O’Connor (1996-2023) are to examine the early years of life. The Irish singer’s career

Sinéad O’Connor was born in Dublin and experienced a difficult childhood. In the autobiography “Memories: Rememberings” she described that her mother had abused her. She moved to her father in young teenage age. After she had become conspicuous several times at school, she came to a boarding school of the Sisters of our Lady of Charity. There she is said to have been abused by clergymen. Later she visited the Newton School in Waterford.


Her music career began in the 1980s when she found the band Ton Ton Macoute. When the band moved to Dublin, she left the school and followed them. The time with the band paved her way to the solo career. At the age of 18 she signed her first record contract. In 1987 her debut album “The Lion and the Cobra” appeared. She celebrated the international breakthrough in 1990 with the ballad “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Until her death in July 2023, she published a total of ten studio albums

O’Connor also became known for her appearance at “Saturday Night Live”. In 1992, during her performance of the Bob Marley song “Was”, she tore a picture of the then Pope John Paul II-a protest against child abuse in the Catholic Church. In 2018, the singer converted to Islam.
