TV legend Rainer Holbe is dead. The moderator died in Frankfurt am Main at the age of 85.
Rainer Holbe died in Frankfurt am Main today. According to agreed media reports, his daughter confirmed that the 85-year-old had fallen asleep peacefully with his family.
Holbe’s career began in the late 1960s when television was still in its infancy. Holbe experienced his big breakthrough with the ZDF music program “Starparade”, which was broadcast from 1968 to 1980. For twelve years he led through the show, which developed into one of the greatest quota hits of second German television. Stars like Barry Manilow, ABBA, Neil Diamond and Frank Sinatra were honored at Holbe.
Pioneer of private television
When private television entered Germany, Holbe was there. He built up RTL significantly and went on air in 1987 with the new format of breakfast television. A special moment of his career occurred on November 10, 1989: The first television station reported Live the next morning about the fall of the wall.
Its journalistic quality was also recognized by the professional world. Holbes RTL talk show “Die Woche” received the renowned Grimme Prize.
In addition to his classic moderator, Holbe was interested in paranormal phenomena. At RTL he led through the program “Incredible Stories”, at Sat.1 he presented “fantastic phenomena”.
