Sandler’s second happy film: 90s humor also succeeds in 2025

Comedy about a hockey player with a lack of impulse control, who tries as a professional golfer: this not only worked well in the 1990s, but also worked in the 2020s.

Nostalgia is always well received by the Netflix audience. Almost 30 years after the first part, Adam Sandler is currently celebrating success with the golf comedy “Happy Gilmore 2”.

Sandler concluded a multi-million dollar deal with Netflix about exclusive films (from this, works such as “Murder Mystery”, “Murder Mystery 2”, “You are not invited to my BAT-MIZWA” or “Spaceman: a short history of the Bohemian space”).

“Happy Gilmore” was a cult in the 90s

With the original film “Happy Gilmore”, Adam Sandler landed one of his first major cinema hits in 1996. The Comedian’s Hollywood career was going well. The film on silliness was not only a success of the cash register, but also developed into a cult phenomenon.

The fact that Sandler (now 58) tried to continue around 29 years later was considered daring. But the sequel “Happy Gilmore 2”, which has been seen at the Netflix streaming service since July 25, was also a success.

More than 100 million calls for “Happy Gilmore 2”

In the meantime, 109.2 million calls have already been raised in just three and a half weeks, as can be seen from the weekly Netflix charts:

July 25th to July 27th: 46.7 million calls28. July to August 3: 40.8 million call 4. August to August 10: 14.7 million calls11. August to August 17th: 7 million calls

The story of Happy Gilmore is simple. Title hero Happy (Adam Sandler) is an ice hockey player persecuted by the bad luck, who was raised by his grandma.

When his grandmother loses her house because of tax debts, he accidentally discovered his talent for Golf and tries his luck. He wants to buy the family house back with the high prize money, but with his broken and unbridled manner, he tackles everywhere.

In part two is Happy widower, father of five children and has an enormous alcohol problem. But he wants to overcome his trauma, play golf again, not least to enable his only daughter a ballet career.

Slapstick humor and crazy game scenes

“Happy Gilmore” is heartwarming and is considered one of the best films in the career of the former “Saturday Night Live” comedian Adam Sandler-with a curious slapstick humor and coarse sayings, which in contrast to other films of the time are well aged.

Part two – including a guest appearance from Eminem – is very modern and action -packed. The comedy skillfully makes fun of the social media world and gamer scene. The film defends almost conservative traditional sports spirit and family cohesion against aggressive business.
