The story of Claudia Schiffer’s unique career began in October 1987 in the “Checkers” discotheque in Düsseldorf. There the then 17-year-old is addressed by a Modelscout Parisian. Schiffer is initially skeptical, but still introduces himself in an agency the next day – accompanied by her mother.
Less than three months later, the Rhinelander receives a contract with “Metropolitan Models” and finds herself in the French capital. “Back then I did not speak a word French, but I decided to pretend that I would understand everything and just said ‘Oui’,” says Schiffer many years later.
After her start as a model, Schiffer was photographed by the German photographer Ellen von Unwerth in 1989 – for the magazine “Elle” and for an advertising campaign by the jeans brand Guess: “This shoot was the turning point in Claudia’s career and gained its access to the most fascinating and exclusive club of the following decade, the supermodels,” said Ellen von Unwerth.
