Erik Menendez remains in prison for another three years. The California probation committee rejected its application for release.
Over three decades after the double murder in Beverly Hills, Erik Menendez (54) failed with his proposal application. The California Commission denied the 54-year-old to release after 35 years in prison on Thursday ,. He can only try it again in three years.
The committee interviewed the committee of two commissioners. In the end it was clear: Erik Menendez remains behind bars for the time being. His older brother Lyle (57), who is detained in the same prison in San Diego, has to go to the probation commission on Friday. It is extremely unlikely that the committee will come to a different decision in its case.
The case that captivated America
The brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1996 after shot their parents José and Kitty Menendez in 1989 in their villa in Beverly Hills. The case moved the American public like no other. The defense argued that the young men had acted out of self -defense – after years of sexual abuse by the father. The public prosecutor, on the other hand, saw the family heritage of the family as a motive.
In May of this year, a judge reduced the originally imposed lifelong prison sentences to 50 years to life without probation. The brothers have been approved for the first time since their conviction for probation.
Detailed description after decades
According to the report, Erik Menendez used the hearing for one of the most detailed representations of his childhood and the motives for the deed. He referred to the date of the hearing: almost 36 years after the murder of his parents on August 20, 1989, he had to answer to the Commission. He described his change in prison and justified his decisions at that time.
