From December to the beginning of March, the minister wants to take a professional break. “I myself will pause during the time of maternity leave. My partner takes over the parental leave,” said Hubertz about her ministry.
The social democrat, born in the Rhineland-Palatinate Trier, was only sworn in as a minister in early May. In March, she would like to return to her government office in March: “The baby will be there, whether in the children’s room of the Bundestag or in the Ministry.”
Verena Hubertz has role models
The first federal minister who received a child during her term was the then family minister Kristina Schröder (CDU) in 2011. As a model for the compatibility of family and politics, Hubertz prefers to name two social democratic party colleagues: “Manuela Schwesig and Andrea Nahles did that too.” As Federal Minister of Family Affairs, Schwesig had received her second child. Nahles had become pregnant as a SPD general secretary during her time.

According to the ministry, talks are currently being held for the representation of Hubertz during maternity leave. However, some cases have already been clarified: “The minister can be represented by the parliamentary State Secretary of the house for participation in cabinet meetings or meetings of the Bundestag and the Federal Council.”
