Venice becomes a hotspot for everyone who loves cinema. Julia Roberts comes to the film festivals for the first time, Al Pacino mixes twice and another star causes Oscar rumors in advance.

Al Pacino, Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Dwayne Johnson, Christoph Waltz, Emma Stone, Charli XCX and Co: The list of stars that are expected this year at the Venice Film Festival is long again. Before the start on Wednesday (August 27), film a handout that is talked about.



Julia Roberts Venice debut with “After the Hunt”

The new “Me Too” thriller of star director Luca Guadagnino (“Call Me by your name”) is one of the most exciting film stars in the autumn. Julia Roberts can be seen in the leading role and thus comes to the Venice Film Festival for the first time. In “After the Hunt” she embodies a college professor who has to deal with the fact that a close friend (Andrew Garfield) is accused of sexual harassment.


“After the Hunt” runs surprisingly outside of the competition. That was a decision by Guadagnino and the producer Amazon, said festival director Alberto Barbera.

Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson in “The Smashing Machine”




Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is particularly known for action and comedy blockbusters, although he was already seen in serious films. His role in “The Smashing Machine”, a sports drama, brought the 53-year-old rumors about an Oscar nomination before the premiere.


Benny Safdie’s biopic tells the eventful history of the American mixed martial art fighter Mark Kerr. Emily Blunt can be seen as his girlfriend.

Jude Law as Putin in “The Wizard of the Kremlin”





It could be politically explosive with the new film by Olivier Assayas. “The Wizard of the Kremlin” tells of Wladimir Putin, embodied by Jude Law. It is told from the perspective of a young consultant (Paul Dano) who is a fictional figure, but is to be based on the Russian politician Vladislaw Surkow. The thriller in turn is based on the novel “The Magician in Kremlin”.

Film fans have known that Jude Law can embody Jewish political characters very convincingly at the latest since “Firebrand”. In it the Brit is to be seen as English King Henry VIII.

Christoph Waltz in “Frankenstein”





There are high expectations of the new film of the triple Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro. The Mexican has made a remake of “Frankenstein”. The fabric is created for Del Toro (“Shape of Water”), who has a preference for dark fairy tale worlds and monsters. In addition to Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, Hollywood star Christoph Waltz and his Austrian compatriot Felix Kammerer play along.

Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver in “Father Mother Sister Brother”

Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling and Vicky Krieps belong to the cast of Jim Jarmussch’s new film “Father Mother Sister Brother”. The tragicomedy is said to be divided into three parts and tell of family dynamics. It has been Jarmussch’s first work since 2019. His fans appreciate the cult director of Laconian films, who often create their own mood with dry humor and a quiet narrative pace.





George Clooney and Adam Sandler in “Jay Kelly”

A charming star duo promises the new film by Noah Baumbach, “Jay Kelly”. In it, George Clooney embodies an aging actor who goes on a trip to Europe with his manager (Adam Sandler). There you have to deal with serious life questions, as Netflix announced in advance for the film. Laura Dern is also there.

Al Pacino in “Dead Man’s Wire” and “In The Hand of Dante”


The acting icon Al Pacino can be seen in two Venice films (both out of competition). Once the 85-year-old is part of “Dead Man’s Wire”, the new film by Gus van Sant. This tells a historical crime about the well-known American kidnapper Tony Kiritsis. In the leading role: Bill Skarsgård.

Pacino is also part of the cast of “In The Hand of Dante” by Julian Schnabel. It deals with the Italian poet Dante Alighieri and his famous “divine comedy”. The film adaptation revolves around the handwritten original manuscript of the text. Oscar Isaac (in addition to “Frankenstein” is his second Venice film) and Franco Nero (“Django”), Martin Scorsese, Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot and John Malkovich.

Emma Stone in the Lanthimos film “Bugonia”


In 2023, Giorgos Lanthimos enthused Venice with “Poor Things” and won the main prize of the film festival. Emma Stone got her second Oscar for the leading role. The two also work together in “Bugonia”. In the remake of a South Korean film, Lanthimos tells of two conspiracy theorists who a company boss kidnappen. Jesse Plemons plays alongside Stone. As usual with Lanthimos, a film full of absurd and grotesque situations is to be expected.

Idris Elba in the Weißen-Haus-thriller “A House of Dynamite”

Kathryn Bigelow is one of six women whose films run in the main competition (the other 15 are from men). “A House of Dynamite” has been announced as a political thriller, which is located in the vicinity of the White House. Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson play leading roles. Bigelow had won two Oscars for her thriller “Deadly Command – The Hurt Locker” in 2009.


Charli XCX in “100 Nights of Hero”

She is one of the currently largest pop stars and professed cineast. With the fantasy film “100 Nights of Hero”, Charli XCX Pop-Glamour brings to Venice. Julia Jackman’s work runs in a parallel section of the festival, not in the main program. Emma Corrin (“The Crown”, “Deadpool & Wolverine”) is also part of the film.

The Venice Film Festival will take place from August 27th to September 6th. The main prize is the golden lion. This time honorary prices for life’s work go to the German director legend Werner Herzog and the actress Kim Novak (became famous with Alfred Hitchcock’s film classic “Vertigo”).
