Bruce Willis and the diagnosis of apasia
The actor’s family announced in 2022 that Willis had received a diagnosis of aphasia. Apsia is a language disorder caused by brain damage that affects communication capacity. A year later, in February 2023, the family announced that the diagnosis had evolved to frontotemporal dementia, and wrote on social networks: “While it is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.”
Heming Willis told Sawyer that he first realized that something was wrong with Bruce when he began to act “a little quieter” in social situations even though he was normally “very conversational and very involved.”
“When the family gathered, he melted a bit,” he explained. “It felt a little distant, very cold. Not like Bruce, which is very warm and affectionate. Doing the opposite was alarming and scary”.
Three years later, Heming Willis said there are still times when Bruce’s personality shines with his own light. He added: “No days, but moments. It’s his laugh, right? He has such sincere laugh. And, you know, sometimes you see that brightness in his eyes, or that mocking smile, and, you know, I transport me. And it is difficult to see it, because as fast as those moments appear, they leave.”
