In addition to Mescal and Buckley, the film also has the performances of Joe Alwyn, Emily Watson, Jacobi Jupe, Jack Shalloo and David Wilmot.
Hamnet marks the return to a more familiar territory for Zhao, after its brief incursion with “eternal” in the world of superheroes and the CGI action of great success.
The history of pain, love, family and art of this period drama puts it more in line with The Rider, Nomadland and Songs My Brothers Taught Methe three films that originally established Zhao as one of the most promising filmmakers that emerged in the last 10 years (the many Malickian touches scattered throughout the first Hamnet trailer also make it a visual and stylistic cousin of Zhao’s efforts prior to Eternals).
For months, “Hamnet” has been considered a possible candidate for this year’s awards, and her Tuesday trailer does not suggest otherwise. However, cinephiles will begin to have a better idea of their place among the next premieres of this fall, once their first projections at festivals are held next month.
