Taylor Swift engages: Is that still up to date?

It is the engagement of the year: football player Travis Kelce asked superstar Taylor Swift around her hand. A YouGov survey has examined what the Germans think of this step.

You did it: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have engaged and celebrate this online with romantic, kissing kiss photos for millions. But is the engagement actually still up to date? Yes, at least 63 percent of those surveyed say a representative YouGov survey. On the other hand, 21 percent engagement does not rate for contemporary. 17 percent did not provide any information or had no opinion.

Incidentally, there is no great difference between the opinion between women and men. What is striking, however, is that younger engagements are still more in favor: In the age group of 18 to 24 years, 73 percent consider them to be contemporary, while the values decrease with increasing age. Only 58 percent of this is left of the over 55 year olds.

But if you are, Dennschon: 55 percent of all respondents consider a ring to be a necessary symbol of an engagement. For 36 percent, the piece of jewelry is not necessarily one of them.

These stars have recently done it publicly

The promise of the superstar Taylor Swift and the US football player Travis Kelce to enter into marriage has electrified their fans and has large parts of the Internet with excess. This is hardly surprising that the development of the relationship has also taken place in the media, at least in part. In his own podcast, Kelce gave the desire to give Swift his mobile phone number, and the musician soon showed himself to be effective in public at the games of the NFL footballer.

And many other stars have already done it: for example, Disney star Selena Gomez made her engagement with partner Benny Blanco public at the end of last year. She posted photos on Instagram with a diamond on the ring finger. She wrote: “Forever starts now”.

And only recently shared Marvel star Simu Liu that he will choose his partner Allison HSU “forever and forever”. In the picture Liu raised his partner on a balcony decorated with flowers and candles and kissed her.

And yet this type of public engagement is not only something for superstars, but also through and through the US culture lived: staged to real knee-all photos and a posting on social networks of the application of a hand with a beautiful ring on the finger are part of the process for many. In Germany, however, the opinion is shared.

52 percent reject social media engagement

Asked whether they support public communication on social media channels, only 5 percent of the respondents of the YouGov survey in Germany stated that they were “fully” doing this. 15 percent are “rather” for it. For this purpose, 51 percent of those surveyed stated that this type of announcement “fully” or “rather” rejected. Another 29 percent have no opinion or do not indicate.

In this country, by the way, it is considered to be engaged who gives a marriage promise – regardless of the form. Neither has to be spoken nor an engagement ring inserted on the finger. According to the Civil Code (BGB), there is no obligation to really marry.

However, if a engaged couple separates, according to the law, compensation can be claimed in some cases. The reason for this is preparations for the planned spouse, for example through expenses for real estate or job changes and moves.

Based on the “Yougov question of the day”, 4194 people in Germany from 18 years from 18 August 2025 were interviewed. The results were weighted and are representative of the German population aged 18 and over.
