The new movie of Yorgos Lanthimos, Bugonia premiered in the Venice Film Festival On Thursday night and critics are beginning to give their opinion about the unconventional black science fiction comedy starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.
Bugonia marks the fourth collaboration of the director and Stone. In his last collaboration – a new English version of The green planet save!of the South Korean filmmaker Jang Joon-Hwan-, Stone plays a powerful executive director of an important company, kidnapped by two conspirators (Plemons, Aidan delbis) convinced that it is an alien with intentions to destroy the earth.
What do the first criticisms about “Bugonia” say
The reactions have been largely positive, and the actors in particular have received great praise.
Pete Hammond, from Deadline, He described the film as a “wild experience” And a return to the top for the Greek author: “Bugonia is a vertiginous and crazy story that is up to the best films of the filmmaker. They all share a surreal point with Bugonia, which is also incredibly relevant to the era of the current misinformation and the conspiracy who live in the depths of the Internet and in their own basements.”
He adds that there are “brave performances of both Stone, once again giving the best of himself, and of a magnificently deranged Jesse plemons.”
Little White Lies highlights the irregular Hollywood history in regards to English remakes of films of the East Asia, but it was pleasantly surprised: “The fun, disturbing and unexpectedly moving bugonia far away justifies the existence of its derivation … Bugonia is also much less oblique than the previous works of Lanthimos, particularly their collaborations, particularly their collaborations with Effthymis Filippou, and sometimes the credentials of [el guionista Will] Tracy as former Succession writer and editor in chief of ‘The Onion’ are unmistakable. ”
Indiewire gives the film a B. rating. The brand especially praises the actors, but also points out: “The tenth feature film of Lanthimos It would have been more attractive, a resounding success, with a duration of 90 minutesinstead of two hours that become a tedious overexploitation of their themes. But then would it seem important enough? Bugonia is deep or deeply absurd. It is both. “
Vulture was also impressed by the particular acting: “Stone is extraordinary (when is it?), He is emotionally twis Patetism and perhaps even provoke some sharp solidarity.
Peter Bradshaw, from The Guardian, He had opinions found about the film, giving him three stars on five. He praised the film, “Macabra and fun”, for his “predictably solid interpretation of Emma Stone, a heartbreaking and clamorous orchestral soundtrack by Jerskin Fendrix and, most importantly, a wonderful final assembly.”
But he continues to say: “Frankly, it is a very, very long path to that great leap” and wonders if “this strange black comedy, although sometimes a little clumsy, has fully won its eventual turn towards serious tragic issues in the end.”
Screen International was a fan and commented: “Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are dynamite in the explosive thriller of Yorgos Lanthimos”and also described the film as “a gloriously gonzo and sharply satirical camera piece.”
Meanwhile, Radio Times of the United Kingdom gives the movie Four stars of five, describing it as “unconventional and scandalous but with a deadly underlying theme.”
The Daily Telegraph of the United Kingdom gives the film five stars and says that “overflow with virtuous pranks”, but you will have to pay to read that review, since it is behind a payment wall.
