Konstantin Wecker on the piano – that was a well -known picture for decades. But that will probably no longer exist.
The musician Konstantin Wecker (78) can no longer play the piano. According to him, the reason is damage to nerves in his hands. “The left hand in particular had failures again and again. At first I didn’t take it seriously, maybe you just got a bad day, it passed again. But it didn’t go. A gradual process that got worse from week to week,” he told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (weekend edition). There is no exact diagnosis.
He can only play “very simple melodies”, he told the newspaper. “Like a little child. Like a beginner. There is nothing more in it. And it will probably not be anymore. There is no prospect of healing.”
“Willy is now history”
That is why he will probably never sing his anti-Nazi song “Willy” on stage again. “Nobody else could let anyone go to the piano. I just have to play it myself. But I can’t do it anymore. Willy is now history.”
The fact that he could no longer play privately was worse for him, said the songwriter, whose new book “The love for the sake” appears on Monday (September 1). “That hurts me a lot more. Sitting on the piano was pure meditation for me. I never practiced, I just played, completely lost in music. Often three hours in a row.
