On the 20th anniversary of the death on April 1, it hadn’t worked, but with a five-month delay, Berlin finally has a Harald-Juhnke-Platz.
Actors, singers and TV entertainer Harald Juhnke (1929-2005) received a special honor 20 years after his death. A place in Berlin has its name from today. However, the official inauguration of Harald-Juhnke-Platz will only take place in four weeks.
Place near the Kudamm stages
In the Charlottenburg district, near the Kudamm stages, Harald Juhnke is now reminded. With the renaming of the square at the Kurfürstendamm, Grolmanstraße and Uhlandstrasse intersection, its artistic life’s work and his close connection with the city are recognized in a “visible sign”, Berlin’s ruling mayor, Kai Wegner (CDU), is quoted. “Harald Juhnke was one of the largest entertainers in Germany and celebrated many successes as an actor, singer and showmaster. With his appearances at the Kudamm stages, he delighted the Berliners.”
District Councilor Oliver Schruoffeneger (Greens) emphasized that Harald Juhnke was “like no other for the attitude to life and the humor of Berlin”. The name of the square is “a special appreciation of its diverse work and a sign of the lasting cultural heritage of our city”. The two politicians will officially inaugurate the previously nameless square on Monday, September 29, at 1:15 p.m.
Urgent request was too short -term
A long, somewhat bumpy process was preceded. Just a few weeks before Juhnkes 20th anniversary, the Berlin district parliament in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf hastily brought an urgency application to the district assembly on March 20, with the demand to name a representative street corner on the sophisticated Kurfürstendamm after the city’s famous son. However, it could not be implemented so quickly until April 1st.
Because as the “Tagesspiegel” reported, the responsible district office said: “Since it is a partial renaming of the Kurfürstendamm, the exact area must first be determined to be assigned to the Harald Juhnke-Platz.” In addition, further districts of such a renaming would have to be agreed and the project in the Official Journal would then have to be announced for three months.
This process has now been successfully completed: “According to the legally prescribed survey of the other districts, the publication in the Official Journal and the expiry of the opposition period, the highly frequented area near the Kudamm stage receives the name ‘Harald-Juhnke-Platz'”, the district office announces.
