Love with Uma Thurman was “dangerous”

In a new interview, Ethan Hawke speaks about his failed marriage to Uma Thurman and the “dangerous” intimacy on the “Gattaca” set.

In one, Ethan Hawke (54) spoke in detail about his failed marriage to Uma Thurman (55) and given surprising insights into the creation of her love.

The two Hollywood stars met in 1996 on the set of the science fiction film “Gattaca” and got married two years later. But what started as great love ended in 2003 in a publicly effective rose war.

Film set romances like turning bottle

Hawke compares the emergence of film set romances in a conversation with “bottle-turning” and explains that the work as an actor has an “imaginary intimacy”. “It is an incredible intoxication. It feels dangerous and exciting. It heats up the temperature in your life,” Hawke describes the intensity of filming with Uma Thurman at the time. This kind of love could be like “falling in the holiday camp” – without any connection to the reality of everyday life. “That is the danger,” he admits.

The separation from Uma Thurman, with whom he has the children Maya (27) and Levon (23), came a year after his first Oscar nomination for “Training Day”. After the “best moment of his career”, his private life collapsed, “in many ways it could have been the beginning of something,” Hawke looks back on the year 2003. Instead, he had to reorient himself professionally: “I was divorced and my private life fell apart.” The depressive phase afterwards showed him everything superficial and “wrong” in the show business.

His best films – the “Before” trilogy, “Boyhood”, “First Reformed” or “The Club of the Dead Poets” – were not the ones that brought him most of the money. “I became a professional even though I never wanted to be a professional. I somehow hate professionals.”

Thurman spoke of “betrayal”

Uma Thurman himself described the divorce in 2005 as “painful” in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. Her self -esteem was “quite battered”, and she spoke of a “betrayal” between her and Hawke.

Today Hawke is married to the former nanny of his children, Ryan Shawhughes, which he married in 2008. The couple has two daughters: Clementine (17) and Indiana (14).
