The Norwegian crown princess cannot travel to America due to her lung disease.

The Norwegian crown princess Mette-Marit (52) will not travel to the USA with her husband Crown Prince Haakon (52) in October. She has to cancel the planned joint trip for the 200th anniversary of the first Norwegian emigration to America. The reason is their chronic lung disease, such as the Norwegian royal family opposite the Norwegian edition

“At the present time, the crown princess is recommended not to carry out a trip to the USA due to its chronic lung disease,” said the palace. It was originally planned that the crown prince couple will travel together to Iowa, Minnesota and New York to celebrate the historical anniversary.

Difficult times for the Norwegian royal family

The canceled trip falls into an already turbulent time for the Norwegian royal family. Mette-Marit’s son from first marriage, Marius Borg Høiby (28), is currently at the center of a large scandal. After months of police investigations, the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon was recently charged with 32 points. The most serious allegations affect four rapes.

The trial against Marius Borg Høiby is scheduled for the period between February 3 and March 13, 2026 with a total of 24 days of negotiations. Høiby denies the most serious charges, in particular the allegations of rape.

For Mette-Marit, who has been fighting with her lung fibrosis for years, the scandal for her son means an additional burden. The 52-year-old has been suffering from the chronic illness since 2018, which causes progressive scarring of the lungs and repeatedly limits its public appearances.
