At a Coldplay concert, Chris Martin spoke to two young Israeli fans. He seemed visibly unsettled – and chose the wrong words in the eyes of many people.
You could see Chris Martin’s uncertainty on stage. At a concert of his band Coldplay in London, Martin took two young women out of the audience. When asked, the two answered that they came from Israel. This was followed by the number of boos from the audience.

“I would like to say the following: I am very grateful that you are here as people. We treat you as equal people on earth, regardless of where you come from,” he said to the women. He thanked them that they were “loving and friendly”. In addition, Martin wanted to “welcome the people from Palestine in the audience … even if that may be controversial”.

A clip of the appearance caused a stir on the net. So some critics said Martin “humiliated” the young women in front of a large audience. Another criticized: “It was a tactless misstep that continues to divided people and deeply injured some of their most loyal fans.”
Criticism of “humiliating” words
The Israeli activist Hen Mazzig summarized his thoughts about Martin’s choice of words. “The humanity of Jews is not up for debate,” he said. “I am sure that Chris Martin thought that he would do the right thing when he said two Israeli girls on stage that he would ‘treat them as equal people’ (Wow, thanks too!),” Continued Mazzig. “I firmly believe in coexistence and the struggle for peace. Israelis and Palestinians can exist outside of this conflict. We should not always have the humanity of a side with ‘but what is to put into perspective with the other.
Other critics on the net mentioned that Gwyneth Paltrow-Martin’s ex-wife and mother of his children-was a Jew. Paltrow grew up with a Jewish father and a Christian mother, but converted Judaism a few years ago. Since Judaism is passed on through the mother, her children are also Jewish.
