Emma Heming Willis has housed her dementia patient husband Bruce Willis in his own home. In an interview, she explains.
Emma Heming Willis (49) made the most difficult decision in her life: Hollywood legend Bruce Willis (70) no longer lives in the common family home due to his progressive frontotemporal dementia.
“It was the hardest thing,” admits Emma. The reason for this drastic measure lies in the nature of Bruce ‘disease: “It requires a calm and relaxed atmosphere.”
A quiet refuge for the action star
The one -story house nearby is considered the “second home” of the family. Here Bruce finds the silence he needs-surrounded by professional round-the-clock care. This solution also means an important return to normality for the common daughters Mabel (13) and Evelyn (11).
“We have two little children, and it was simply important that they had a home that supported their needs and that Bruce could get a place that meets his needs,” explains Emma. The girls can invite friends again and celebrate overnight parties “without having to sneak around on tiptoe.”
Emma is aware that its openness about the family situation causes controversial reactions. In one end of August, she reacted to critical comments on her decision, which she had previously shared with Diane Sawyer in the ABC news program “Emma and Bruce Willis: The Unexpected Journey”.
“I knew that we would see two camps by sharing our intimate information. People with an opinion of people with actual experience,” said Emma. She had expected that “people with an opinion would quickly judge over the nourishing”.
The family benefits from the new situation
Despite all the resistance, Emma is grateful for the possibilities that this solution opens up for her family. “Everything feels much calmer and more relaxed now,” she describes the change. In Bruce’s new home, Mabel and Evelyn also deposited their own clothes, toys and handicrafts. “I can be Bruce ‘wife again, and the children can be children – there is beauty, and I am so grateful for that,” Emma describes her feelings.
“Dementia is different in every home, and you have to do what is right for your own family dynamics,” emphasizes Emma in the conversation. Even if it brings her heart, she sees the only way in her decision: “This way we were able to support our whole family, and it has opened Bruce ‘world.”
