Tom Holland explains how ADHD and dyslexia help him to act and why creativity is so important for him.
Tom Holland (29) encourages others: The “Spider-Man” star openly spoke about his ADHD and dyslexia diagnoses. For the 28-year-old, however, these supposed obstacles have become an important building block of his acting career.
“I think games really help. I have ADHD and am dyslexic, and I sometimes notice when someone gives me an empty canvas that can be slightly intimidating,” Holland told the magazine. He also encounter these challenges in the development of his film characters.
Creativity as a key to success
The Marvel actor swears by a very special method: he taps his inner child. By “playing” Holland prepares for each of his roles. “Any kind of how you can interact with something as a young person or as an adult that forces you to be creative and think outside the usual lanes,” he describes his approach. Holland is convinced that this type of creative work is decisive: “The more we do such things, the better it gets.”
Diagnosed at the age of seven
Dyslexia was found at Tom Holland at the age of seven. In a podcast conversation with Jay Shetty in July 2023, he spoke in more detail for the first time about the challenges of his youth: “My dyslexia really only affects my spelling. Spelling was the biggest hurdle.”
During his school days, Holland struggled through the difficulties. “I worked really hard at school. I was not particularly good, but my parents said: ‘The main thing is that you do your best’,” recalls the actor. His parents Dominic and Nikki Holland were standing aside and continuously encouraged him.
Role model for other affected people
Today Tom Holland has become a role model for people with similar diagnoses. The “Uncharted” star not only learned to deal with ADHD and dyslexia – it even uses these properties to its advantage in a career that requires maximum creativity.
Holland is currently working intensively on his next big project: “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” should bring the popular superhero back to the screen. For the actor, it is another opportunity to demonstrate his special skills and show that supposed weaknesses can strengthen real strengths.
