Pedagogical experience in the heart of the Perito Moreno glacier

Within the framework of the International Year of glaciers conservation, the 5th year students with tourism orientation of the Padre Manuel González School, of El Calafate, lived a unique pedagogical experience when walking on foot the periglastic area of ​​the Perito Moreno glacier. This educational day, promoted by the company Ice and adventureconcessionaire of the Los Glaciares National Park, provided participants the opportunity to complement their theoretical knowledge through unforgettable practice.

The proposal combined a navigation in front of the imposing southern face of the Expert MORENO glacier, a landing on the opposite coast of Lake Rico and an ice approach walk. This practice allowed students to connect directly with nature and reflect on the importance of glacial environments.

The students participated in an informative exhibition where the importance of glaciers, ice and snow within the climatic system and the water cycle was explained. His key role as freshwater reserves, climate regulators and as sources of scientific information that allow us to understand the environmental changes over time.

The activity concluded with the presentation of various environmental initiatives oriented to the reduction of the carbon footprint, the promotion of clean energy, environmental education and the conservation of native species. In addition, the students toured the facilities to learn about the “behind the scene” of the excursions. In the next few days, they will continue to participate in training instances linked to sales management, attention to the public and the purchasing area.

The glaciers cover approximately 10% of the earth’s surface and are the result of processes that take thousands of years, during which accumulated snow is gradually transformed into ice.
