When the celebration escalates

“The wedding” in the South Tyrolean mountain idyll tips into the pure drama – again a star ensemble in Jan Georg Schüttes impro -ministry convinces.
A wedding is always a state of emergency. But when director and Grimme award winner Jan Georg Schütte (62, “The funeral”, “The Festival of Love”) stages such a celebration, one can be sure: This is not about the perfect process, but about a roller coaster between emotion, drainage and resounding laughter.
With “The Wedding” Schütte now brings his new Impro mini series into the first and to the ARD media library-and thus continues the success of his unpredictable narrative style: no scripts, only roller letters, and an ensemble that courageously plunges into the unknown. “They integrate very quickly and then do not get any special treatment,” says Schütte about new actors in the cast like this time Tobias Moretti (66). “The evening before the shoot there is a meal together and all of them share their fear of the crazy shoot the next day. Very nice ritual for everyone,” reveals the director and author in an interview with Spot on News.
And madness fits: Even the plot itself is a ride on the razor blade between the Glossy Instagram show and family meltdown.
A couple who leaves nothing to chance – except for love
The focus is on Jäcki (Luise von Finckh, 31) and Lukas (Felix Kreutzer, born 1993) who want to stream their marriage live on the net – as a spectacular launch of their new fashion label. But while the bride is full of PR gloss, the patchwork of mothers, fathers, ex-lovers and in-laws is questionable in the background.
Grütigam father Johann (Moretti), hotel owner Alte Schlages, is surprised by the sudden new family gain – the bride and groom only got to know each other around New Year’s Eve. Schütte was enthusiastic about having the native of Tyrolean Moretti in the team: “It was very practical because of course he knew about the customs of the area and, last but not least, also with the dialect.”
Surprises guaranteed
For Schütte, improvisation lives from the moment – and that is exactly the attraction for the spectators. When asked how much he enjoys it when the actresses bring their own ideas with them, he says: “Oh yes, very much. I like to be surprised and I often see that only when the material is sifted.”
He was particularly fascinated by this shoot two unexpected scenes: “Tobias Moretti’s song on the piano and that it fit perfectly with the parallel scene of the youth. And the idea of the boys to secure the high-gloss advertising banner with gray armored tape against the wind.”
Shine, madness and tradition – in six explosive episodes
Whether a bride who suddenly makes a confession during the dress rehearsal, a mother -in -law whose facade is crumbling, or the day of the wedding itself – each of the six episodes opens new abysses and offers comedic and tragic moments.
This mix of high gloss and absurdity is also reflected in the costumes: “Our costume designer Susann Günther has come up with this, with whom I have been working with. I think the clothes are great,” enthuses Schütte about Jäcki’s wedding dresses. These are “extremely modern, one is from the 3D printer – cool, somewhat absurd and therefore also comedic,” he adds.
Family drama meets influencer reality
The strength of “The Wedding” lies in its merciless honesty. While Jäcki and Lukas want to sell the perfect love story with social media glamor, Schütte asks the more honest questions: What does cohesion really mean? What are the truths when the masquerade slips?
And of course you can also look forward to a top -class and convincing ensemble in all scenes: In addition to Moretti, Finckh and Kreutzer, Anja Kling (55), Martin Brambach (57), Devid Striesow (51), Lena Klenke (29), as well as Gustav Schmidt (29) and Josephine Bloéb (32). The director Charming comments that the latter is niece: “I thought it was great that the two knew each other because they also have a close relationship in the plot. But that was not a casting criterion.”
A high on the unplannable
With just two days of shooting in June 2024 in the South Tyrolean mountains, an exceptional series event was created. “The wedding” is a festival of improvisation – chaotic, funny, bitter and heartbreaking at the same time. Anyone who already liked “the funeral” (2022) or “The Festival of Love” (2023) will not be disappointed this time.
“Yes, there are a lot of plans, but nothing in dry towels yet,” says Schütte with a wink about his future TV projects. Actress Lena Klenke, however, would have a few concrete suggestions for the next Impro project by the Meurer/Hell/Streuble families: “Maybe on summer vacation? Or on a road trip? I imagine that,” she told the broadcaster.
“The wedding” – from September 5, 2025 in the ARD Mediathek and from 10 p.m. in the first.
