Corona pandemic: Brinkhaus optimistic that schools can stay open

The Union parliamentary group leader does not want to completely rule out renewed school closings. Anyone who makes definitive promises now, dares “go far out the window,” says Brinkhaus.

Union parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus is optimistic that schools in Germany will not have to close again because of the corona pandemic – but does not want to make a definitive commitment.

“We are working to ensure that that does not happen, and it is so that it looks very, very good,” said the CDU politician on RTL / ntv “early start”. However, he also said: “To be completely honest: someone who now makes definitive promises dares to venture far out of the window because the happening is of course still more dynamic.”

Brinkhaus emphasized that it was not known which virus variants would still emerge in the course of the pandemic. The Delta variant, which was first discovered in India, is currently causing concern because it is considered more contagious than previous virus mutants.

According to Brinkhaus, however, work on ventilation and test concepts has been “wonderful” in some federal states, and other states will have to follow suit. “We have to work accordingly over the summer holidays.”

In view of the Delta variant, child protection activists had recently warned that children could become pandemic losers again and insisted on better protection in schools.
