Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg largely rejects social media. Especially Instagram is out of the question for him how he told on TV.
Former Federal Defense Minister Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg (53), who is now a publicist and moderator, revealed why he decided against accounts on Instagram and Twitter. On Friday evening, the once celebrated politician said that he could only get through a profile at LinkedIn. There he has published a weekly column since 2022.
“Happy without social media”
“Three years ago, I was asked by a producer to promote a film on social media,” said Guttenberg. “But I said goodbye to all social media eleven years ago because I basically had the snout full of this form of attention and was happy without social media,” said Guttenberg in the September 5 issue. “Then everyone said that you have to advertise that you do it today. Then I said Instagram is out of the question, so I lack the botox on my face, Twitter is in the manners so that I don’t want to deal with it.” They then went through all social media “and I rejected them for myself”.
Clear names make the difference for him
Ultimately, only LinkedIn remained in which professional contacts are mainly made. “The way of dealing with the hand is and you have to register with real names. That is already a difference,” says Guttenberg, who also acquaintances that his former awareness and the associated hype scared him. In the past, he already spoke openly about depression and that he reached the limits of his resilience due to his high positions.

In 2009, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg was initially Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, then Federal Minister of Defense. After a plagiarism affair for his dissertation, the CSU politician had to reorient himself professionally in 2011. He initially moved to the USA with his family and won. Since then he has been a consultant, but also as a co-producer and moderator of documentation. He published several books, most recently in August 2025 “3 words – new notes from the present”. Since 2023 he has also presented together with Gregor Gysi “Gysi against Guttenberg – the Germany “.
In private, he recently made headlines when his relationship with Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (52) became known at the end of April 2025. Previously, Guttenberg had been married to Stephanie von Bismarck-Schönhausen (48) since 2000. The two got two daughters together.
