Jury chairman rejects criticism

After the awarding of the Golden Löwen in Venice, the jury chairman Alexander Payne had to put up with many critical questions.

The award ceremony at Venice’s 82nd Film Festival caused a surprise in the professional world. Because the jury honored the tragicomedy “Father Mother Sister Brother” with the main prize for the best film – and not the favorite “The Voice of Hind Rajab”. The jury chairman Alexander Payne (64) defended this decision during a press conference.

“As a jury, we appreciate both films alike”

The golden lion for the best film went on Saturday evening to Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother”, in which Cate Blanchett and Adam Driver can be seen. Many festival observers had expected that Kaouther Ben Hania’s Gaza drama “The Voice of Hind Rajab” would receive the main prize that caused tears at the premiere and received 23-minute applause. However, the jury missed second place to the film of the Tunisian.

In a press conference after the price gala, the Greek-US-American film director and screenwriter Alexander Payne had to put up with many critical questions from journalists. “The unfair at a festival is to say that this film is better than that. That is not true,” said the jury chairman, as reported. “As a jury, we appreciate both films alike, everyone for their own reasons. We wish both films a long and significant life and hope that the support from the prices given this evening will help them in their own way.”

However, the decision of the internationally occupied jury was obviously short: “If we had voted on the day before or the day after, it might have been different. And if one of them had to receive one price towards the other, then only because we had to make a decision for 0.000001 percent.”

Payne denied that a jury member threatened to resign

The rumor had even appeared on social media that a jury member threatened to resign due to disagreements about the main prices of the festival. Payne decidedly rejected this: “One of my jurors threatened with his resignation? No.” He added that one should “not believe everything” “what we read online”.

The Jury at the 82nd Film Festival of Venice, under the chairmanship of Alexander Payne, included the Oscar-nominated Brazilian actress and author Fernanda Torres, the Iranian author filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, who was awarded the Golden Palme, Romanian director, author and producer Cristian Mungiu, the French director Stéphane Brizé, the Italian Director Maura Delpero as well as the Chinese actor and producer Zhao Tao.
