Charlie Sheen reveals: Clint Eastwood convinced him in 1990 with a call to start therapy against his drug addiction.
Charlie Sheen (60) has been silent for 35 years. Now he unpacks – and reveals a story that is likely to surprise Hollywood veterans. In the new two-part Netflix documentary “Aka Charlie Sheen”, the 60-year-old actor describes for the first time in detail the dramatic intervention of August 3, 1990 that changed his life. The turn of the story: Clint Eastwood (95) of all places made the breakthrough with an unexpected phone call.
What was announced as a birthday party for Father Martin Sheen (85) turned out to be a carefully orchestrated intervention. “I was invited to Dad’s birthday party,” Sheen recalls in the documentary. His mother called him and said that they had to celebrate early because the father had appointments. “She said: ‘We thought at 9 a.m.’ I asked, ‘In the morning?’ You: ‘Yes.’ “When he entered the house and looked for balloons, cakes and funny hats, instead a” very professionally organized circle of people “awaited him.
An unusual round
The composition of the group, as Sheen describes it, was “a strange mix”. In addition to his siblings Emilio (63), Ramon (62) and Renée Estevez (58) and his parents, his history teacher from seventh grade, his yoga instructor and Rob Lowe (61), sat there. It was striking who was not there: Sean Penn (65), Sheen’s long -time friend, was aware of it. “I was never involved in these interventions,” explains the drama star in the documentation. The reason: “I wasn’t exactly on a perfect path in some ways.”
The day was “very emotional”, says Sheen. He was mostly silent, while all the heartbreaking letters are present. “There is a lot to be processed. I had heard of such things before, but was never so close to an intervention.” When he asked to be able to think about rehab, the group was adamant: “You said: ‘No. This is a decision that we made for you and that must happen today.'”
The crucial call
First of all, resisted and thought about pretending to agree to escape the situation. “I thought: ‘If I just agree to get out of this situation, I can probably put a plan somewhere else.'” But then his father left the office and said: “There is someone on the phone who wants to talk to you.”
Sheen expected a family member, but heard a voice that he immediately recognized. “It is a very recognizable, globally known voice. It’s clint.” Eastwood, who would soon be Sheens Co -Star in “Rookie – The Beginner”, found the right words. “He said something like: ‘You have to get the train back on the rail, boy … you are worth it to be saved.'” Sheen adds: “That was really powerful. I thanked him, gave the phone back to Dad and said: ‘Well, let’s go.'”
The long way to sobriety
Only in 2017 Charlie Sheen finally became clean. “You have to be ready,” he explains. “I have a mental list of the worst, most shameful things I have done, and I can look at it in my head when I feel like a drink, “. The Netflix documentary “Aka Charlie Sheen” is now available and gives a relentless insight into the life of one of the most controversial Hollywood stars, according to Netflix and the specialist press.
