Rosie O’Donnell looks back on the break with Ellen Degeneres. A comment from over twenty years ago the friendship burdened.
Rosie O’Donnell (63) hit the end of her years of friendship with Ellen Degeneres (67). In the talk show “Larry King Live”, DeGeneres said in 2004 that she was not friends with O’Donnell. “It was pretty much the most painful thing that ever happened to me in the show business and in my life,” recalled O’Donnell. “I couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I have photos of her how she holds my newborn babies in my arms. I’ve known her for 30 years.” She never completely got over the words of degeneres.
“Instead of deciding on my side and holding my hand, as I did with her, she did the opposite,” she said too – an allusion to her coming out. Both moderators live openly lesbian – Degeneres had already outed himself in 1997, O’Donnell followed five years later.
Ellen DeGeneres apologized with her
In the meantime, Ellen Degeneres has apologized to the actress and comedian. In 2023 Rosie O’Donnell said that degeneres contacted her. “A few weeks ago, she sent me a text message to ask how I was doing and I asked her how she could no longer be on TV. It’s a big change.”
Degeneres, on the other hand, wrote to her about her comment at the time: “‘I’m really sorry and I can’t remember that.'” Apparently she had become aware of this on a talk show because of a statement by O’Donnell. O’Donnell itself could never forget the moment. “I remembered so well that I did not let T-shirts with the inscription ‘I don’t know Rosie. We are not friends’ and gave her my employees,” said O’Donnell an earlier reaction to the note. She felt that degeneres should no longer be part of her life.
