The filming for the long-awaited “Highlander” reboot with Henry Cavill (42) in the leading role must wait. , the Brit should have suffered an injury during the intensive preparation phase, which results in a shift in production. Originally, the new edition of the cult franchise staged by “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski (56) should go to the cameras this year-now a start of shooting is probably only realistic for early 2026.
The Amazon MGM Studios project brings the history of the immortal warriors back to the big screen. Michael Finch is responsible for the script, while a top -class line -up completes the ensemble: Russell Crowe, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Dave Bautista and Max Zhang have already been determined.
Cult status of the original
After his end, Henry Cavill embodies another fantasy icon as a title hero. New Zealand Russell Crowe (61) plays his mentor Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez. US action star Dave Bautista (56) gives Kurgan, also the immortal adversary of the Highlander. In the original from 1986, the French-American actor Christopher Lambert (68) embodied the Highlander. With Sean Connery (1930-2020), a Scotsman gave the Ramirez. The film became a hit that resulted in several sequels as films and series.
Stahelski said in the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast that he goes to the “Highlander” world with a franchise idea. The story is supposed to stretch over several films and thus give individual characters more depth.
In an interview with “Collider”, the director stated that it will not only be a remake of the cult classic, but a more extensive further development of the saga is planned. “We are moving the plot from the Highlands to today’s New York and Hong Kong in the early 1500s. There is a lot of action and it is a bit of a love story – but not the way you think.”
