Lola Young’s “Messy” ran up and down on the radio in 2024 – while she was fighting her cocaine addiction herself. Now she speaks openly about it.
With “Messy” Lola Young (24) conquered the charts in 2024, but behind the scenes the British singer fought her own demons. In an interview, the 24-year-old now spoke openly about her cocaine addiction and how difficult it was to find the balance between career and inner healing.
“Search teaches a lot”
“It was a fight – I definitely had to work on my inner healing while I was on tour at the same time,” said Young. “I had to refrain from being finished for a while to finish all of this.” While “Messy” climbed up in the charts, Young checked into a withdrawal clinic to combat her cocaine addiction, with which she had “had long” dealt with. Just a few months later, in January, she was back on the big stages.
Today she looks back and knows: “Searches teach you a lot. She makes you more empathetic to others who go through similar things. It is a constant journey.” In particular, the musician born in London emphasized how grateful she was for the support and resources that were available to her: “Many people do not have the privilege of getting such help. Searching for so many – and if you know that, it knows that it is not a linear process. It goes up and down.”
Open handling of mental health
As early as 2022, Young had spoken publicly about her mental health. At the time, she shared on Instagram that she was diagnosed with schizo -affective disorder at the age of 17 – a disease that combines symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. “I fought immensely to accept this part of me, and I still learn it,” she wrote at the time.
Young emphasized that despite everything, she did not want to be reduced to her illness: “My mental illness does not define me – it is my superpower.” At the same time, she described the extreme ups and downs she experiences and that medication is necessary to keep the symptoms in check.
New album
Musically, Lola Young is the next chapter on: On September 19, her new album “I’m only f ** king myelf” will be released.
Young is considered one of the most exciting newcomers in the British music scene. With songs like “Fake” and “Blind Love”, she established herself as a talented singer-songwriter before becoming a cover version of “Together in Electric Dreams” for a big Christmas commercial in 2021.
The singer achieved the final international breakthrough with the song “Messy” from the album “This Wasn’t Meant for You Anyway”. The song ended up in first place in the Charts in Great Britain and in seventh place in Germany.
