The audience decides at the film festival in Toronto: over 290 films, but a drama about Shakespeare, love and loss is the most touching the audience. Who was still in the race?
The drama “Hamnet” by director Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) is the winning film at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The head of the festival, Cameron Bailey, announced this at a award ceremony on Sunday. Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel tells the story of William (Paul Mescal) and Agnes (Jessie Buckley) Shakespeare, whose marriage has to cope with the death of her eleven -year -old son Hamnet.
The second place went to “Frankenstein” by director Guillermo del Toro with Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi in the leading roles, in third place Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery”.
International prize to Park Chan-Wook
The viewers “The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue” by Barry Avrich chose the best documentary. The oppressive film tells the life history of an Israeli family during the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. The International People’s Choice Award was awarded to Park Chan-Wooks “No Other Choice”.
In contrast to festivals such as Cannes, Berlin or Venice, the winning films are not chosen by a jury in Toronto. Instead, the spectators vote for their favorite films. At the TIFF, over 290 films competed for the favor of the audience this year.
