TV broadcaster CBS recently announced the Trump critic Stephen Colbert’s late night show. The moderator was awarded the Emmys – and celebrated by the audience.
With a standing ovation and a “Stephen, Stephen” response choir, the Hollywood stars celebrated Late Night Moderator Stephen Colbert at the Emmy Awards Late Night Moderator. The 61-year-old won the prize for the best talk show and took the opportunity for an urgent speech.
“I never loved my country with more despair,” he said in his thank you speech. “God bless America, stay strong, be brave.” The broadcaster CBS announced two months ago to stop his “late show” in May 2026. The discontinuation of the “Late Show” had triggered a lot of criticism because Colbert is considered Donald Trump’s critic.
Stephen Colbert looking for a job
The moderator was unable to resist a little swipe on his station when he appeared at the Emmys. “When I have your attention: Does anyone hire new employees here?” He joked. “I also brought my curriculum vitae with me,” said Colbert – he only had “no possibility for a current photo”. He then presented Harrison Ford an old portrait photo of himself, with the request that the actor should pass it on to director Steven Spielberg.
The broadcaster had the decision to break down Colbert’s show with financial considerations. However, many industry experts suspected that CBS acted out of consideration for the US President. Colbert had taken over the program in David Letterman in 2015 and made the most successful late night show on US television.
At the time, the moderator himself informed the audience about the end of the show, the spectators in the studio – and Colbert let know: “I share your feelings.” Donald Trump then wrote that he “love it” that Colbert had been put at the door: “His talent was even smaller than his ratings.”
Particularly piquant to Colbert’s appearance at the Emmys: The award ceremony is also broadcast on CBS in the USA. The 61-year-old presented the prize for the best leading actor in a comedy series who went to Seth Rogen in the Hollywood satire “The Studio”.
Stephen Colbert did not yet want to reveal how it continues for him. In an interview on the sidelines of the Emmy Awards, he only said that he focuses on the next nine months in which his show is still running. “This show demands everything from me every day,” said the moderator.
