WDR moderator Marcus Werner died at the age of 51 after a serious illness. He moderated the “Local Time OWL” for 15 years.

The Westdeutsche Rundfunk mourns: Marcus Werner, moderator of the “Local Time OWL” for more than 15 years, died last week after a serious illness at the age of only 51. The broadcaster announced this on Friday evening. The journalist from Schleswig was considered an anchor of the Bielefeld program and sustainably shaped regional television in East Westphalia.



“For many of his colleagues, Marcus was a wonderful colleague and also friend. His voice, his energy, his ideas – they are now missing,” Gabi Ludwig, editor -in -chief of the WDR state programs, is quoted in a press release from the WDR. Werner got to the point and had a sense of what the audience is moving.

The journalist, born in Schleswig in 1974, had spent his childhood and youth in Aurich in East Frisia and in Brühl in Baden. In addition to Berlin, Bielefeld later became his home country. Since 2009 he has been part of the moderator team of the “Local Time OWL”, which is sent from the WDR studio in Bielefeld.


Versatile media maker and author

Werner’s commitment went far beyond the daily local time. He moderated various election programs on WDR television and was in front of the camera for various productions from other channels. As a successful novel and non-fiction author, he also wrote as a columnist for “Wirtschaftswoche” about “the everyday minor matters in business”.
