After “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” from the program, a US citizens’ rights organization, including 400 stars, is fighting for freedom of expression.
US talkmaster Jimmy Kimmel said clearly for Charlie Kirk in his late night show in his late night show. The 57-year-old had accused Donald Trump’s Maga movement in his show to instrumentalize Kirk’s murder politically. The broadcaster ABC then stopped the broadcast of the show indefinitely. Stars reacted indignantly to the discontinuation of the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Show. Jennifer Aniston (56), Ben Affleck (53) and Tom Hanks (69) now signed a letter that warns of a “dark moment for freedom of expression”.
More than 400 celebrities support Jimmy Kimmel’s letter. The publisher published the document on September 22, in which the constitutional right to freedom of expression is defended. Hundreds of big names from the entertainment industry show “solidarity” with the organization as well as Kimmel and signed.
“Our freedom of expression must not be threatened”
“We, the people, must never accept that the government threatens our freedom of expression,” one reads at the beginning of the letter. “The efforts of managers, artists, journalists and companies to put pressure on retaliation for their statements hit the core of what it means to live in a free country.”
To have taken Kimmel’s show out of the program represent a “dark moment for freedom of expression in our country”. “Regardless of our political belonging or whether we are politically committed or not, we all love our country,” it is emphasized. But: “We also share the conviction that our voices must never be silent by the rulers – because if it happens to one of us, it will happen to all of us.”
The letter ends with the lines: “This is the moment to defend freedom of expression in our whole country. We encourage all Americans to join us and the ACLU in the struggle to defend and maintain our constitutional rights.”
Numerous stars sign the letter
This is what stars like Aniston, Affleck and Hanks as well as Disney stars such as Selena Gomez, Pedro Pascal, Diego Luna, Martin Short and Meryl Streep. Other signatories are Jason Bateman, Robert de Niro, Jane Fonda, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Rodrigo, Ben Stiller, Jamie Lee Curtis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Keaton, Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo or Kerry Washington.
Jimmy Kimmel moderates the late night show since 2003. “Mr. Kimmel’s statements were inappropriate and extremely tactless in a moment critical for our country,” said Jason Smith, deputy chairman of the Sinclair radio group, in a statement that recited. “We believe that broadcasting organizers have responsibility to promote and strengthen a respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities.” Kimmel was asked to “apologize directly from the Kirk family” and “to make a significant personal donation to the Kirk and Kirk’s charity organization Turning Point USA”.
During a state visit to the United Kingdom on September 18, US President Donald Trump said that the moderator “was fired for lack of talent”.
