Prince Harry warns of dramatic consequences of the cuts in HIV programs: millions of people are in mortal danger.
Prince Harry (41) raises the alarm. In an urgent video for Unaids, the 41-year-old warns together with celebrities such as basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson (66) and Oscar winner Charlize Theron (50) of the devastating consequences of drastic cuts in HIV and AIDS fighting. shown for the first time on September 22nd.
The screenwriter Ron Nyswaner (68) nominated for an Oscar produced the short film. The topic has long been a matter close to his heart, for example, he wrote the script of the AIDS drama “Philadelphia”, for whom Tom Hanks (69) received the Oscar as the best main actor in 1994.
“We will relapse without urgent action,” warns Harry in the short film. “We already see drastic cuts in HIV prevention and treatment programs.” The figures that are presented are terrifying: Theron says in the video that around 4.2 million avoidable deaths will be threatened by 2029 if the financing is not restored. “Magic” Johnson knows how important the right treatment is: the sports star has been HIV positive for over 30 years.
Dramatic consequences for millions
Particularly dramatic: At the moment, information about babies with HIV are born because their mothers can no longer be treated with antiretroviral medication due to the funding gaps. “Without urgent action to reverse this paralyzing financing cuts, six million other people will be infected with HIV, while four million will die of AIDS-related causes,” warns the Duke of Sussex in a statement belonging to the video.
In his mother’s spirit
With his commitment, Harry steps into the footsteps of his mother Princess Diana (1961-1997), who was considered a pioneer in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Diana had made a significant contribution to reducing false prejudices on the transfer of the disease. Harry himself has already completed HIV tests several times, including together with Rihanna (37), to attract attention to the topic.
