From the Olympionician to the state mother: Princess Charlène’s life in pictures
Today’s Princess Charlène of Monaco was born on January 25, 1978 as Charlene Wittstock in Zimbabwe. As a child, she was a “wild catch”, she recalled in a later interview. It showed early that the girl was a swimming talent. In the 1990s, the family moved to Benoni, near Johannesburg and since then Charlène had been in South Africa. At the age of 18 she won the national championships. In 2000 she competed at the Olympic Games and made it on the 100- and 200-meter route in the back swimming under the top 20. Together with three teammates, she became fifth in the 4×100-meter layout. In the same year she met the then attendant Albert at a swimming competition in Monaco. She finished her career in 2007.
