Historical change of power in Luxembourg: These royals and politicians come to the big celebration on October 3.
A historical event will take place in Luxembourg on October 3: Grand Duke Henri (70) hands over the crown to his eldest son, hereditary grand duke Guillaume (43) after almost 25 years. Numerous high-ranking guests from home and abroad are expected for the ceremonial ceremony.
Some Royals are particularly traveling from the neighboring states: the Belgian royal family will be represented by King Philippe, Queen Mathilde and Crown Princess Elisabeth. King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Crown Princess Amalia travel from the Netherlands.
Some representatives from politics will also be on site: France is represented by President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte, while Germany is represented by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Elke Büdenbender. Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, and António Costa, President of the European Council, also agreed to participate.
Where are the other royals?
Other royals, such as those from Great Britain, Spain or Sweden, are apparently not on the guest list. In contrast to other monarchies, Luxembourg has no tradition of celebrating the change of throne with a large public splendor and the invitation of numerous foreign royals.
With the royal houses of Belgium and the Netherlands, however, the Grand Duchy combines a long historical and family relationship. The Luxembourgers and the Dutch go back to the Nassau house. Grand Duke Henri and King Philippe are also cousin’s first degree.
The new Grand Ducal Family
A new chapter in the history of Luxembourg begins with the climbing throne of Guillaume and his wife Stéphanie (41). The couple will jointly take responsibility for the country and symbolically stands for a modern and future -oriented Grand Duke Hof.
Grand Duke Guillaume and the Belgian countess Stéphanie de Lannoy, now hereditary granddaughter of Luxembourg, married in October 2012. In May 2020, her first child, Prince Charles, was born. In March 2023 they became parents of another son, Prince François.
Grand Duke Henri had announced in his Christmas speech in 2024 to hand over the throne to his eldest son after almost 25 years after almost 25 years on the throne and to hand over the role of the head of state.
Luxembourg is the only existing Grand Duchy in the world today and has around 670,000 inhabitants. The title of the Grand -based is in the rank between Herzog and King.
