“Without Coleen I would be dead”
Wayne Rooney speaks openly about his alcohol problems
Ex-footballer Wayne Rooney used to have big alcohol problems. He managed to cope with the addiction thanks to his wife Coleen’s help.
Wayne Rooney says he could have died if his wife Coleen hadn’t helped him with coping with his alcohol problems. “I honestly think if she weren’t there, I would be dead,” said the former captain of Manchester United and the English national team.
During his active career, Rooney had “massive problems” with his alcohol consumption. Nevertheless, he scored a total of 253 goals for Manchester United. In 2021 Rooney ended his active player career. Then he moved to management, most recently at the Plymouth Argyle association, which he left last December.

“I have made mistakes in the past that are well documented. Sometimes I am a little different and she keeps me on this way and she has been doing that for over 20 years,” said Rooney in podcast about his wife Coleen, with whom he has been married since 2008.
“I wanted to go out, enjoy the time with my friends and spend the evening with them. At some point I went too far – that was a moment in my life when I had to struggle with alcohol,” said Rooney. During his relationship with Coleen, several affairs, brothel visits and other scandals used to come to light, which made high waves in the British tabloids.
“I didn’t think I could turn to anyone. I didn’t really want to do it because I didn’t want to put this burden on anyone,” says the ex-footballer in retrospect today. “I just drank through for two days. I came to training and at the weekend I scored two goals and then I went back and drank again for two days.”
“I was a coma drinker”
Coleen Rooney stayed by his side during her husband’s crises. “She helped me enormously to control that. She managed me because I needed leadership.”
The couple has four sons, Kai, Klay, Kit and Cass between the ages of 16 and 7. Rooney already spoke about his alcohol problems three years ago. “I was never an alcoholic. I was more of a coma runner. If I had two days off, I literally drank for two days and then knocked on the dust – eye drops, chewing gum, mouthwash – to go to work and then walk around and train on the field. Sometimes I didn’t offer my club the best version of myself.”
Ultimately, the ex-footballer helped talks. “I spoke to people. It helped. You let your feelings run wild. I didn’t always do that – I have eaten it into myself, and then it builds up.”
